PRESTEGÅRDSHAGENE - FARM HOUSING
AHO, GK2, Spring 22, 5 weeks
Location: Porsgrunn, Norway
The Old Eidanger rectory garden in Porsgrunn is a small paradise with vibrant soil and ancient forests. The rectory gardens serve as an oasis for organic and sustainable farming. Four additions were to be added to the community farm: a residence for agricultural interns, a communal house, a garage for the tractor, and a home for the ducks.
The entire property is surrounded by forest, except for the western side that opens up to a road. To reach the rectory, you must follow a long and slender gravel road. On each side of this path, two expansive fields unfold. One of these fields is presently under cultivation, while the other patiently awaits the conditions necessary for cultivation. At the end of the gravel road, a small roundabout with a prominent tree at its center comes into view. Positioned to the right is the grand rectory, a wooden structure painted in white with a large roof covered in warm red-orange tiles. Nestled behind the main residence lies the historic rectory garden, complemented by a red barn. Moving deeper into the property reveals another field dedicated to the cultivation of crops such as corn and cabbage. Adjacent to this field, on the right-hand side, stands a spacious greenhouse crafted from brick, wood, and glass, specifically designed for cabbage cultivation. A smaller greenhouse is also nestled nearby. To the left of these greenhouses stands a rustic red barn. Behind this barn, a small hill features an arrangement of large gray stones, serving as a home for beehives.
The new buildings will be situated in the area near the barn and stone structure. This section of the property offers a spacious area currently not designated for any specific use, making it an ideal location for placing the new structures. Throughout the day, the site receives abundant sunlight. Furthermore, the new buildings are designed to harmonize with the existing structures in terms of circulation. In the new additions, wood and brick will be utilized as primary materials. Considering that the existing structures on the property are constructed from wood and brick, employing these same materials for the new buildings is a natural choice, contributing to a cohesive aesthetic for the site. Wood allows for the creation of lightweight structures that seamlessly blend into the natural surroundings. The use of brick, in contrast to the airy quality of wood, imparts a sense of solidity and substance to the buildings.
